Long before it became known as “economic development” the people of Marthasville have been actively working as a quiet community tending to business. Even before Lewis and Clark started their westward venture, the town, formerly known as “La Charrette”, was an active trading and farming community. Taking advantage of it’s location as a “bedroom community” to those traveling along the Missouri River to or from the bustling metropolis of 18th Century St. Louis, it has slowly evolved. As the river moved away finding new banks to reach it’s destination with the Mississippi River, Marthasville also found a way to continue it’s business growth as a transportation point for farmer’s grain and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad. Passengers and produce were the products which Marthasville was providing to the residents, including many who moved here from Germany in the middle 1800’s to farm like they did in the Old World. Yet, even though the river took a new route and the railroad moved, the people of Marthasville have continued to work to provide a healthy business climate. Like the ebbs and flows of the Missouri River, Marthasville has taken its own turns adding tourism and antiques to its transportation and small manufacturing services as it anchors the south end of Warren County. Renovating the downtown area has been one of the projects which has occupied the hearts and minds of Marthasville. Current downtown businesses are restoring their buildings to the glory and glamour of the late 19th century. History and community parks are being restored or added. The city fathers are improving the town’s infrastructure to be able to accept the numerous families who are continually moving in to enjoy Marthasville’s wonderful charm. Just south of Marthasville, the airport has been undergoing upgrades and improvements to serve businesses on both sides of the Missouri. New businesses are establishing themselves along Highway 47 which leads north toward the rest of Warren County and it’s juncture with Interstate 70 continuing to St. Louis or Kansas City, while agriculture is still a mainstay of the community, with a major grain elevator operation as well as an orchard and vineyards close by. . Even though businesses come and go, the future for Marthasville is nothing but bright. Come visit Marthasville’s cornucopia of businesses and experiences. You may end up moving here as so many have already done—to work and enjoy the quaint beauty and quiet life of southern Warren County. ![]() |
